  • Biographical / Historical

    Ella Geer was born and raised in Charleston, Illinois. An exceptional violinist, she had received violin lessons from a member of St. Louis Symphony Orchestra prior to her acceptance to the Curtis Institute of Music in 1926. Although she was invited the following year to continue her studies, she chose to marry instead. Following the births of her three children she taught violin, and played with both the Cleveland Women's Symphony and the Denver Symphony Orchestra.

    The Ella Geer correspondence comprises (135) letters from Ella Geer to her fiance Keith Emery relating her experiences as a violin student at the Curtis Institute of Music during the 1926-27 school year. The collection includes a biographical sketch, summaries and excerpts of letters, provided by her daughter Carol Emery Bastian.
