Biographical / Historical

Veda Reynolds was born in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1922. Coming from a musical family (her father was concertmaster of the Denver Symphony Orchestra), Veda trained at the Brussels Conservatory, in Paris with Ivan Galamian and in London with Carl Flesch. In 1938 she was accepted to the Curtis Instiute of Music where she studied under Efrem Zimbalist. Graduating in 1942, she joined the Curtis faculty (1942-1961) and became a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra where she was assistant concertmaster for the 1958-59 season. Reynolds also formed the Philadelphia String Quartet with three other members of the orchestra, but the group cut ties with the orchestra in 1966 under significant resistance from its administration. Moving across the country, the Quartet then became the quartet-in-residence of the University of Washington. In later years Reynolds taught at the North Carolina School of the Arts (1975-1977) and at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Lyon after moving to France. Her students included Joseph Silverstein, David Harrington, Michael Tree, and William de Pasquale.
