Biographical / Historical

The Spoleto Festival, originally known as the Festival of Two Worlds and held in Spoleto, Italy was founded by Curtis alum Gian-Carlo Menotti in 1958. In 1977 a companion festival, Spoleto Festival USA, was begun in Charleston, South Carolina. The intention of these international festivals, both of which still exist today, was to make opera more accessible to a wider audience.
