Practice notebooks, 1944-1951
Scope and Contents
These (4) notebooks were kept by Shaffer during her lessons with William Kincaid both while at Curtis and after. They contain insight into Kincaid's teaching methodologies on, among other topics, intonation, finger position, breathing technique, phrasing, rhythm, tonguing, and syncopation. They also provide Shaffer's and Kincaid's notes on her playing of specific pieces including the Concerto no. 1 in G Major (Mozart), Fantasie (Faure), Suite in A Minor (Telemann), Sonata for Flute and Piano (Hindesmith), Concerto in C for flute, harp and piano (Mozart), Flute Sonatas nos. II - VI (Bach)
