Biography

Modeled after Milan's La Scala, the Academy of Music (also referred to as The American Academy of Music) opened in 1857. It was the primary performing venue of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1900 to 2001.

Today, the Academy is home to Opera Philadelphia. As such, the Academy is the oldest opera house in the United States that still used for its original purpose.
