Biographical / Historical

The mansion at 1726 Locust Street was the city home of the George W. Childs Drexel family. Built circa 1893 by Peabody and Stearns, Boston, the home was constructed in the Beaux Arts style. The Drexel family filled it with fine furnishings, artwork, and decorative items gathered from around the world. In 1924, Mary Louise Curtis Bok, daughter of the founder of the Curtis Publishing Company, had it remodeled by H. W. Sellers to house the Curtis Institute of Music.
